Japanese Studies

Japanese is the 8th most widespread language in the world and nearly 130 million people speak it as their mothertongue. Knowledge of the Japanese language is important for political, cultural and economic relations with Japan.

The goal of the course is to introduce students to the main rules of Japanese grammar and enable them to understand spoken language and to communicate in Japanese. Students are also introduced to the Japanese written language, kana and kanji, and learn to read and write the symbols which appear in the curriculum.
It is required that students will dedicate themselves to learning vocabulary for reading and writing simple texts.

In addition to the teaching of language, students are given an overview of the history of Japan, Japanese literature, and Japanese cinema. Students also get an insight into Japanese society and culture, where they learn about things such as daily life in Japan, the family, gender roles, education, economic system, music, cartoons, animated film, traditions and customs.

If students want to take 180 e (credits) in Japanese, they are required to take their third school year abroad. In that case, students must contact the department and apply for that specifically.
